Community SOLUTIONS of El PasoRelevant Program Data

Community SOLUTIONS strives to be a responsible steward of all resources. During this fragile economy, 2008-09 revenue decreased substantially and was a predictor of more serious shortfalls to come.
To assure continuity of services to existing clients the highly dedicated Board, and Staff strengthened sustainability efforts to become less dependent upon grants and more self-sufficient. To outsiders steps taken may have seemed drastic. However, services have continued uninterrupted, and to those of us on the inside that is the only concern.
Today, the first-ever waiting list for new child referrals is a thing of the past and programming is again in full swing. New activities, more beneficial than ever, have been added, and the children are thriving and mentors and volunteers are having a great time interacting more meaningfully and more frequently than ever with the “Connections KIDS!”
For those who may wonder of the benefits, or even the necessity of a specialized program for children of prisoners, here is some food for thought:
Children of prisoners are known to be at as much as 70% risk for involvement in substance abuse and other delinquent behaviors, ultimately leading to their own incarceration! It costs an average of 35,000.00 to house just one prisoner for one year. For only 2,500.00 per year Community SOLUTIONS can provide basic services to keep one child from ever going to prison at all.
The math speaks for itself. Community SOLUTIONS is a good investment.
Community SOLUTIONS benefits the community by:
- increasing community safety
- improving overall quality of community life
- reducing the drain on community resources
- saving the community and taxpayers substantial sums
The Need is Great
Of the 2.5 million children of prisoners that live in the U.S., at least 7500 live in El Paso. Over 200 of these children have been referred for services over the past year.
More referrals continue to come. They cannot be served without community financial and volunteer support.
